Emergency return of a Dreamliner to Okęcie — what happened to passengers on the Dominican Republic flight?

Yesterday brought passengers of the LOT Polish Airlines flight to the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) emotions that no one had planned in their holiday calendar.
The aircraft of the Polish flag carrier, shortly after taking off from Chopin Airport, had to turn back and land in emergency mode. The reason for the return was a technical fault that prevented the safe continuation of the multi-hour flight across the Atlantic.
Course of events: Security procedures in action
The decision to return to the airport in Warsaw was made when the machine was still relatively close to the base. In accordance with safety procedures, the plane had to perform a fuel dumping or burning maneuver to reach the appropriate landing weight.
- Safe landing: The machine touched down on the Chopin Airport runway without complications.
- Inspection: Immediately after taxiing to the apron, LOT technicians started working, conducting a detailed inspection of the Dreamliner.
- Ground care: Passengers were directed to the terminal, where they were provided with drinks, meals, and access to information.
Update: Situation after the incident
The carrier took swift steps to minimize the delay:
- Replacement aircraft: LOT Polish Airlines provided another machine (Boeing 787 Dreamliner), which took over the passengers of the unlucky flight.
- Continuation of the journey: The replacement flight took off from Warsaw and the passengers are already on their way to the Dominican Republic or arrived at their destination in the morning.
- The fate of the damaged machine: The plane in which the fault was detected remains in the hangar, where it undergoes comprehensive servicing.
What are passengers entitled to in such a situation?
Worth knowing: According to EU regulation (EC 261/2004), if the delay at the destination exceeds 3 hours and results from a technical fault (which is not an "extraordinary circumstance"), passengers may be entitled to compensation of up to 600 euros per person.
In addition to possible compensation, the airline fulfilled its obligation of care by providing replacement transport and meals while waiting at the airport.
What to do if your flight is delayed?
- Keep all boarding passes and receipts for expenses.
- Monitor the flight status in the carrier's mobile app.
- Ask the staff to issue a written confirmation of the delay with the reason.
